Canon 5D MkIV, 24-105mm F4L IS USM
@ 73mm, ISO100, F4, 25” Exposure (10 Stop Nisi Filter used)
As I was only about 20 minutes from Wanaka, I thought it was a good time to visit again. It was the second time visiting this tree to take a photo or two. I wasn’t happy the first time with the flat grey skies so I thought I’d try again but I didn’t have much luck again. There were a lot of people taking photos of this tree. Some were there with their mobile phone, others with a compact camera and others with DSLR’s. Then there was me.
I set up my tripod and attached my camera to it. I balanced it all out looking through the viewfinder trying to compose the shot. I put on the front of the lens a 10 stop Natural Density filter. I dialled in some settings on my camera and I took 10 to 30 second exposure shots.
People started gathering around me to see what the hell I was doing taking forever to take just one shot. I received a lot of “wows” when they saw the final result. A couple asked me to help them take a photo with their camera so it can look like mine. I gladly unmounted my camera off the tripod and mounted theirs. I changed some of their settings, added the 10 Stop Nisi filter and a few seconds later the look on their face was priceless. They were so grateful. They couldn’t thank me enough as they were taking home something special rather than just a snapshot.
